Jupiter Heating Systems has been successfully installing specialised underfloor heating systems in historic buildings for over ten years. Over these years the company has developed unique solutions that are now well tried and certainly well tested within buildings throughout the country.
Successfully heating old buildings is achieved with a combination of skills. Understanding how the building envelope performs is one aspect but understanding what impact the sometimes precious floor finishes have on the heating strategy is another. Jupiter understand this more than other suppliers and have made a point of concentrating on this at design stage.

Underfloor heating can be an excellent solution for old buildings whereas old, high temperature cast iron radiators are not. Low temperature radiant floor heating provides a more gentle heat which is proven to be kinder to old building fabric and the valuable contents within.
The question of whether the output of the floor heating is sufficient is the key question and most of the time it is. Unfortunately it is the actual building fabric that is insufficient and the reason why some rooms still feel uncomfortable despite having heating installed within the floor. Draughts caused by ill fitting windows and simply old single glazing are the most common causes. These problems can be overcome if recognised and effectively dealt with.
Floor heating is actually a large radiator whereas the lumps of metal on walls are called convectors. As can be seen in this schematic, convective heat rises to the top of a space and provides a lot of heat where it is least needed. Radiant heat on the other hand provides heat where it is needed and dissipates gradually as it rises.
This attribute of radiant floor heating therefore provides far more effective heating in rooms with high ceilings - rooms that are typically found in large, historic buildings. |

Chris Kollmer began Jupiter Heating Systems in 2004 and has consulted on heating systems for many historic buildings including The New Bodleian Library, Oxford; the Shell Tower at Waterloo as well as countless churches. In conjunction with close colleagues in this specialised field, Chris can provide experienced advice on the most challenging of projects.
